Kingsbarns Distillery History
1800s - East Newhall Farm was built as part
of Cambo House Estate.
1900s late - East Newhall Farm is in
ruin.
2009 - former golf caddie Douglas Clement
begins looking for investors to convert the Old
Farm into a Distillery. He saw a market for the
many Wealthy Golfers playing the courses at St
Andrews and Kingsbarns, that also wanted to
visit a Distillery.
Many of the 32 initial Investors were
Wealthy Golfers. This however did not raise
enough money to build the Distillery, so
searches continued for further Investors.
2010 - Clement received planning permission
to convert the East Newhall Farm to a
Distillery.
2013 - Clement sold the business to the
Wemyss family, owners of Wemyss Malts, with
Clement becoming a Director.
The Wemyss family had links to Cambo Estate,
as the 7th Earl of Wemyss owned part of Cambo
Estate between 1759 and 1783.
2014 - East Newhall Farm was converted to be
used as the Kingsbarns Distillery.
The Distillery uses Fife grown barley and
water from an aquifer 100m below the
Distillery, producing just 33 casks a week of
Spirit. The Spirit has to be matured in Oak
Casks for at least 3 years and a day, before it
is classed as Single Malt Whisky.
2017 - Kingsbarns begins producing Darnley's
Gin as well as Single Malt Whisky. Gin Tours
are made available as well.
2019 January - Kingsbarns Single Malt Whisky
is made available for sale.
2027 - the first bottles of Kingsbarns 12
years old will be sold.
