Lockerbie Garden of Remembrance

The Lockerbie Garden of Remembrance is in Dryfesdale Cemetery, 1 mile west of Lockerbie town, next to the A709 road that runs between Lockerbie, Lochmaben and Dumfries, 71 miles south of Glasgow.

The Gardens were constructed in 2003 in honour of the Pan Am Flight 103 that crashed at Lockerbie on the 21st December 1988, killing all 243 passengers, 16 crew, and 11 people on the ground in Lockerbie. Postcode: DG11 1HZ

The Building in the image top is the Dryfesdale Lodge Visitors Centre. Since 2003, this former Caretaker's Cottage has been used to give informtion on the Garden of Remembrance, and holds a Book of Remembrance.

The Garden of Remembrance is at the far end of the Cemetery, with the main Memorial holding the names of the Passengers and Crew killed in the disaster.

There are a number of Plaques in the Garden placed by people that have visited in honour of their relatives.

The scenic Gardens are an incredible place to visit, sure to stir the emotions of all visitors.

Within a short time of the crash, invetigators found the Aircraft had been brought down by a Bomb in the luggage compartment.

Iran, Libya and Palestine were suspected as could have been involved with the Bomb.

2001 Jan 31st - the Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was found guilty of 270 counts of murder in a Scottish Court. Megrahi was sentenced to life imprisonment in Scotland.

Magrahi was Head of Security for Libyan Arab Airlines, believed to have been a Libyan Intelligence Officer.

2009 - Magrahi was released from Prison so he could return to Libya as he was dying of cancer.

2012 May 20th - Magrahi died in Tripoli aged 60. Some people still claim he may not have been responsible for the Bombing.

There is also a Book or Remembrance at Tundergarth Church in the hills 3 miles southeast of Lockerbie, where the nose cone of the Aircraft landed.

A small Garden with a Memorial is on Sherwood Crescent in Lockerbie in honour of the 11 people from the Town that died. This Garden is where the wings of the Aircraft landed, demolishing a number of Houses.
