Logan Botanic Gardens

RS Home

Logan Botanic Gardens are in Dumfries and Galloway, 14 miles south of Stranraer, 6 miles southwest of Sandhead village, one and a half miles northeast of Port Logan village.

The Gardens are popular for Scenic Woodland Walks, Walled Garden, Discovery Centre, Botanics Shop, and the Potting Shed Bistro.

The gardens were also used in The Wicker Man horror Film with Britt Eckland, Christopher Lee, and Edward Woodward. The Film was about a Scottish Island growing vast amounts of fruit, so the Gardens were used to show the Island was like a tropical paradise. Postcode: DG9 9ND

The Discovery Centre is next to the Walled Garden and Bistro.

The Walled Garden is huge with trees and plants from around the world. The mild year round climate due to the Gulf Steam running up this coast, along with the the high walls, makes ideal growing conditions for a wide range of plants.

The top end of the Walled Garden shows the high wall with the remains of Castle Balzieland. Most large Country Estates had Walled Gardens built in the 1700s - 1900s so they could grow vegetables and fruit.

The high walls block any wind, and hold the heat from the sun.

1295 - John Balliol awarded these lands to the McDouall family. This led to the building of Castle Balzieland that was destroyed by fire in the early 1500s.

1702 - Logan House mansion was completed for the McDouall's.

1800 - the Walled Garden was completed to grow vegetables and fruit for the Mansion.

1869 - Agnes Buchan Hepburn married James McDouall, leading to her transforming the Gardens with exotic plants and trees from their own vacations, and from World Explorers of the time.

1969 - the Gardens were gifted to the Nation, with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh taking control under the name Logan Botanic Garden.

Logan House, about 1 mile north, has its own Gardens that were also open to the public.

2023 - Logan House was put up for sale at £9 million.

The McDouall's invested a lot of money in Port Logan village.
