Oban Highland
Games are in late August.
The image top right is from Pulpit
Hill on the south side of the Town, a
popular viewing area where you can walk
up to, or drive up. The large images show
the Top Sights and Hotels.
The large Ferry is arriving at the
South Pier where the Train Station is
situated. The North Pier is just across
the Bay, normally used for large
Yachts.
Oban is popular for Ferry and Boat
Trips to a number of Islands including
Mull for the town of Tobermory, Iona
for its Abbey, Staffa for Fingals Cave,
Kerrera, Lismore, and further out, Barra
and South Uist.
The South Pier is also used by the
Fishing Boats with sea fish Restaurants
along the Pier.
George Street runs between the two
Piers with great views over the Bay. This
area was re-designed in 2016.
At the North Pier is the Oban
Distillery with McCaig's Tower
sitting high above. These are two of the
top Attractions in the Town. You can walk
up to the Tower, or drive up. The Tower
was built from 1897 for a local banker
John Stuart McCaig, as a Monument to his
family. The Tower is popular for its
Views, Scenic Gardens, and Barbecues.
The North Pier has a number of
Restaurants and is used for Yachts and
Cruise Ships. Many famous people park
their large Yachts here.
St Columba's Cathedral is on the
Coarran Esplanade. The Cathedral was
completed in 1959 to designs of Sir Giles
Gilbert Scott. The Esplanade has a number
of Hotels and Guest Houses with great
views over Oban Bay.
At the north end of the Coarran
Esplanade is the Oban War Memorial,
Seamen's Memorial, and Dunollie
Lighthouse. This is a great spot to view
the Ferries departing and returning to
Oban.
Dunollie
Castle and House Museum are a few
hundred yards north of the War Memorial.
You can explore the Castle Ruins and
House for a small entrance fee. This was
the ancestral home of the Clan
MacDougall.
About 1 and a half miles past the
Castle are the scenic Ganavan Beaches.
The first smaller Beach is by the
roadside, with the larger Beach half of a
mile further north. There is a much
larger car park at the North Beach.
Glencuitten
Golf Club is on the east side of Oban
with a good sized Clubhouse and real
interesting holes.
