Regular Trains run between Glasgow Central
and Pollokshaws West, then there is about a one
mile walk through the scenic Estate from the
Pollokshaws West Train Station to Pollok House
and Burrel Collection. Taxi prices from Glasgow
centre are about £20 each way.
Pollok House is situated in a Vast Estate
with many scenic walks and jogging areas around
the House, that are free to use.
Pollok House was built for the Maxwell's in
1752, and remained in that family until Anne
Maxwell Macdonald gifted the House, Art
Collection, and Land to the City of Glasgow in
1966. The National Trust for Scotland, took
over the running of the House in 1998.
The top floor family rooms are packed full
of Period Furniture, and one of the UK's finest
collections of Spanish Art, including paintings
by El Greco, Goya, and Murillo. Downstairs, the
large Servants Quarters show what it was like
to run a large Country House. There is a Cafe,
also with outdoor seating.
The Gardens are a nice place to explore with
a Watermill and Little Homes, not sure who
lives in the Little Homes.
The Burrell Collection Art
Gallery is also situated in the vast
Pollok Estate, about half of a mile from Pollok
House. The Burrell Collection has over 8000
objects, including work by major artists such
as Rodin, Degas, and Cezanne. The Burrell also
holds historic late Medieval Art, Chinese Art,
Islamic Art and more.
The collection is named after the person
that collected the Art, and funded the
Building, Sir William
Burrell, a Scottish Shipping Merchant and
Art Collector, born in Glasgow 9th July 1861,
died 29th March 1958.
The Burrell often displays temporary
exhibitions, and has events and activities for
adults, and some for families.
The Building is so large, it is hard to
believe it was built to hold the collection of
one person. The Burrell Building has a large
car park, and children's outdoor play park.
