The Image top right is of the Car Park for
the walk to the Bone Caves, just under 3 miles
of a steady incline with much of the path being
over stony ground.
The Caves are high up in the rocky hill on
the right side.
There are two paths higher up, one crosses
the burn leading straight up to the Caves, the
other goes straight up the Glen below the
Caves, round the top of the Glen and up to the
Caves that way.
If there has been a lot of rain, you may
have to go up round the Glen as the burn is a
lot narrower that way.
Both routes are fairly steep up to the Caves
along narrow paths with a good drop down. There
is normally a strong wind blowing up the Glen
as well, so you have to take care at the high
section.
There are two fairly large Caves and a
number of smaller ones to explore.
1995 - Cavers found the bones of Lynx, Brown
Bear, Arctic Fox, Reindeer, Polar Bear, and
Humans.
The bones of four Humans were dated to
around 4,500 years old.
Reindeer bones were dated to 47,000, 25,000
and 8,300 years old, showing Reindeer lived in
this area before and after the last Ice Age
about 10,000 years back.
2008 - the Skeleton of a Bear taken from the
Caves was dated to about 11,000 years old.
The Lynx and Polar Bear skulls are a
permanent display in the Museum of
Scotland in Edinburgh.
The Caves here have been of great importance
to Scientists exploring the evolution of the
UK.
You can continue the walk up onto the
