Glenfiddich Distillery History
1886 - the Glenfiddich Distillery was
founded by William Grant in Dufftown, Scotland,
by the River Fiddich, producing Blended
Whisky.
1898 - Grant's begin marketing their first
Blended Whisky, with names such as: Best
Procurable, Hare and Hounds, Liqueur, and
Grant’s Shannon.
The name they later used most was Standfast,
after the Grant Clan motto ‘Standfast
Craigellachie!’.
1933 - production at the Glenfiddich
Distillery expanded after the end of the
Prohibition in
the US. It was illegal to sell Alcohol in the
US from 1920 to 1933. Grant's spent a lot of
time and money promoting sales overseas.
1956 - Grant's began using a triangular
bottle, still used today, popular around the
world, in about 180 countries.
1963 - Grant's opened a Grain Distillery at
Girvan in southwest Scotland. This could now be
the largest Distillery in Scotland, with
warehouses stretching for miles.
The less expensive Grain Whisky from Girvan
is used for Blending with the more expensive
Malt Whisky.
Grain Whisky is less expensive as a number
of Grains can be used straight away. Malt
Whisky has to be made from Barley that has been
allowed to Malt, a slow process, but gives more
taste.
1963 - the Glenfiddich Distillery is used
solely to produce Glenfiddich Single Malt, from
12 to 50 years old, also with some rare cask
editions. A 12 year old bottle of Glenfiddich
Single Malt in 2019 was priced about £30.
1969 - the Glenfiddich Distillery Visitor
Centre was opened.
1972 - Grant's begin making Grant's
Vodka.
1980s - Grant’s Standfast was re-branded as
Grant’s Family Reserve. The most inexpensive of
the Grants Standfast Blended Whisky in 2019 was
priced about £13. Blended Whisky is at least 3
years old, extremely popular as it can be about
one third the price of Single Malt. 12 year old
Blended Whisky was priced about £20 in
2019.
1994 - Grant's produce Virgin Vodka for
Richard Branson up to when Branson ended his
drinks business in 2007.
1999 - Grant's begin producing Hendricks Gin
at their Girvan Distillery.
2003 - Grant's Vodka became Glen's Vodka.
2014 - William Grant & Sons took over
Drambuie, claimed to be for around £100
million.
