countryside, as well as into the Distillery

This is a Single Malt Distillery producing
Whisky matured in ex Sherry and Bourbon Barrels
from 8 to 78 years, £76 to £150,000. Older Rare
barrels can lead to bottles of The Macallan
selling for vast amounts of money.

The Macallan Distillery History
1700 - Easter Elchies House was completed
for Captain John Grant.
1824 - The Macallan Distillery was founded
by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer, one of the
first Distillers in Scotland with a Legal
License for manufacturing and selling
alcohol.
The Distillery was built on land leased from
Easter Elchies Estate, producing Single Malt
Scotch Whisky, mainly matured in US Oak
Bourbon, and European Oak Sherry Barrels.
1800s mid - Reid sold The Macallan, leading
to the Company growing into a world wide
brand.
1961 - The Macallan bought Easter Elchies
Estate and House.
1960s - The Macallan had 6 stills,
increasing to 21 by 1975.
1980s - Easter Elchies House was restored,
now used by the Distillery for Accommodation
and Education.
1996 - Highland Distilleries bought
Macallan.
1999 - Edrington bought Highland
Distilleries for £601 million, including
Macallan and a number of other top brands.
2018 - a bottle of The Macallan Valerio
Adami 1926 / 60-year-old sold for £848,000 at
auction in Edinburgh, a record at that
time.
2018 - the new Macallan Distillery with a
Visitor Experience was completed for about £140
million, containing 36 stills.
2019 - a bottle of The Macallan 1926 sells
for a record £1.5m at Sotheby's auction in
London. This new record was set as the bottle
was from Cask number 263, claimed to be the
Holy Grail of Whisky.
Cask 263 was bottled in 1986 when 60 years
old, producing only 40 bottles. Most of the
Whisky in Old Casks evaporates away, known as
the Angels Share. A Standard Barrel normally
produces between 150 and 200 bottles.
Rare bottles of Whisky are now mainly bought
by Collectors and Investors, not for
Drinking.
Today - The Macallan is owned by Edrington, also
owners of Highland Park, The Glenrothes, and
The Famous Grouse.
