Strathisla Distillery History
1786 - this Distillery was founded by two
local men close to the ruins of Milton Castle,
with the original name being the Milton
Distillery, using water from the nearby
Broomhill Spring.
They produced Malt Whisky under the name
Strathisla, the oldest working Distillery in
the Highlands.
The Distillery was built up by selling Casks
of Whisky to Bars, Merchants, Grocers, and
Private Households around the North-East of
Scotland.
1801 - Strathisla began selling some of
their Whisky to the Chivas Brothers of
Aberdeen, a Grocers that used Strathisla Whisky
in their Blends, with their top Blend being
Chivas Regal 18
to 25 years old.
Some other Grocers also became famous for
their Blends, such as Johnnie Walker
from Kilmarnock.
Most Blended Whisky is made from a Blend of
Malt Whisky and the less expensive Grain
Whisky. Exactly what percentages are unknown,
but the ones that got it right, made their
fortunes.
Some Distilleries allow you to create your
own Blend, by mixing different Malts with
Grain, till you find the ideal Blend for
yourself.
1828 - the Distillery was bought by a local
Merchant named William Longmore.
1940s - during the Second World War, this
Distillery was taken over by a Company from
London, who Sold Off most of the Stock, then
left the Distillery to fall into disrepair.
This Company was placed into the hands of
the Receivers after an investigation by the
Inland Revenue for un-paid taxes.
1950 - Chivas Brothers bought the Distillery
for £71.000, then spent much more
restoring it to its former glory. Chivas
Brothers then changed the Distillery name to
Strathisla.
Chivas Regal became a top name around the
World, with the American singer/actor Frank Sinatra
being their most famous customer.
